When the handy fanny pack first arrived on the market in the late 1980s there was only one style of these carrying cases really available. This is not the case today, with the broad selection of styles and designs now available, many of which provide new and inventive features not seen in the original styles of the late 80s and early 90s.
Often promoted as one of the safest and least inconvenient ways to carry personal belongings, especially when attending an active, public event, like a sports game, rock concert, or fair, the fanny pack is actually a way to keep your belongings close and secure at all times regardless of where you may be. By using one of these packs women don’t need to worry about their purse and men have the ability to carry more than a wallet will allow.
Cheap fanny packs can still be found in large numbers on the market. These styles are very similar to those that first hit the retail stores in the 80s. They are usually made from a light fabric that is not terribly sturdy and does tend to tear at the seams eventually, especially with very frequent use.
Better quality styles include those made from sturdy canvas, thick, unpolished cotton, and of course the leather fanny pack. If you’re purchasing a pack that you expect to last for any length of time, you should consider buying one of better quality and construction. While you may end up paying a little more for it, in the long run the additional investment will pay off, as it will have a significantly longer usable life.
The styles of fanny packs now available include those that are specially designed to serve a specific demographic. For example, there is the waterproof fanny pack which is designed primarily for active people who might where the pack while hiking, running, or even while whitewater rafting.
Another variety of specialty fanny pack is that which is created to hold not only personal belongings but also provide easy access to a cell phone or PDA. This style is often referred to as a fanny pack holster, as they offer amenities of both the traditional waist pack and the waist cell phone holster.
There is also the concealed fanny pack, which is quite similar in style and design to the traditional money belt. For people who are carrying large amounts of cash or other similarly important personal possessions, this style of pack can be a lifesaver. Knowing that you have what you need and also don’t need to be concerned about having your pack stolen or being pick-pocketed is the biggest draw for this particular style.
Local retail shops usually carry only a few styles of these handy packs and often only the least well constructed varieties as well. In order to find the best styles of fanny pack you usually need to look online. You should also be prepared to spend a little extra money in order to get a good quality item, though you might find some discount sales and clearance deals on some retail websites.
